With elections due to start soon, poll experts are searching at various ways to determine the winner of India’s common elections, due to be held in 2014. The Election Commission of India had asked for all political parties in India to make clear, their stance on the need for pre-election polls and its legitimate authority. Opinion polls are not allowed 48 hours prior to voting.

The Congress party, which had given a letter stating that it supported opinion polls, has now modified its view and desired to limit pre-election polls, after viewpoint polls show that it could lose the upcoming assembly elections. This is now being seen as a way to curb democracy, and the party is being criticized for its change.

The CNN-IBN-The Week survey had displayed that if elections were to be held today, the UPA determine would go down to between 134-142 seats against the NDA’s 187-195 seats. The Congress would win among 116 to 124 seats as against the BJP’s 171 to 179 seats.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party is in opposition to the idea, several regional parties are in favor of prohibiting the opinion polls. The Congress party’s sudden change in its stance is being seen as a way to curb any bad news that reflects its party’s poor efficiency.
